In days gone by,there was no such thing as Social Security,as we know now.Although times were haed even for those in regular employment, for those who were unable to work it was even harder. For these people, there was a system of so called Parish Relief,it consisted of a Panel of so called "Charitable Local Benefactors",and it was to this Panel that these unfortunate people, had to make there "claim".Thus came about the saying "living on the parish".I do hope this helps. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.

Sounds like someone living on charity in a parish, which is what I think the almshouses were for. Just a guess, though.

Hi June, I would think a person who is dependant on the parish to provide food and shelter, a person who is a pauper perhaps? I don't know for sure, but that would be my guess. Sue
