Married or Widowed ?

On both the 1871 and 1881 census I have a Marianne Pike down as married, but with no sign of her husband Alfred. He was there in 1861. It should say widowed if he died, so do you think he's done a runner ? Rick.

Doesn't it say anything in the status column? Guess it doesn't or you wouldn't be asking the question. Seems strange if it doesn't say anything.... is she living on her own or with family? Tyne

Hi Tyne, The status says married on both and she's living with her children. Rick.

Rick Bit of an obvious question, but you are a Chelsea supporter!! and need all the help you can get!! but have you looked for Alfreds death. Lynda

Hi Philip, Tried looking for him in both 1871 and 1881 with no success. I assumed he had died, but just noticed it doesn't say widow in the status column. He was a wig maker and the family certainly moved around a lot in the 1840s and 50s, but seemed to settle in St Pancras after that. Rick.

Thanks for that Lynda !! I did look for a death between 1861 and 1871 with no luck. Would you mind looking in your 1871 name index for him in case he's been added in the last couple of months ? Alfred Pike, born St Georges in the East, Stepney about 1817, so aged 54 in 1871. Rick.

Rick No he is not on the 1871. Have you got them in 61? Lynda

Lynda, Yes thanks, got the 1861. They're a weird bunch these Pikes (no offence Michelle if you're around !!) I think Alfred has something to do with a non-conformist church. I found an Alfred Peaches in 1881, born 1819 in Lambeth, who's a Clergyman of the Church of England Without Souls. He's married with a family though, so probably not him. Been trying to find out Marianne's maiden name for ages though with no success. I finally tracked down what I think is her daughter Lily's birth today - as Matilda Pike in Camberwell, but I can't read the page number on 1837online :-( Rick.

Rick My GG Grandad married, or lived with a Lucieta Pike after his first wife died, perhaps we are related! Lynda

Now that would be funny ! I'm convinced I'm going to find a link to Michelle's Pikes someday. Both East London families too. I'm getting very confused about Lily/Matilda. Does any of this make sense to you ? Think her birth was registered first quarter of 1849 in Camberwell as Matilda. On 1851 the family had a 2 year old daughter Louisa, born Paddington. On 1861 it says Mathida, aged 12, born London. On 1871 it says Lillie, aged 22, born Camberwell. In 1881 it's Lily, aged 31 born St John's Wood. In 1991 it's Lily aged 39, born St John's Wood. I always thought Tilly was short for Matilda. I keep wondering if it's all the same person ! Rick.

Rick Could it be that Lillie has been mis transcribed and should be Tilly? Lynda

Lynda, It's definitely an L on the images I've seen. Rick.

Lynda, Would you do me another favour ? I don't remember if I ever got you to check the 1851 Pike information for me. I got it from the 3% name index on Kindredkonnections originally, so maybe Louisa is a mistranscription ? The address is 1, Beresford Street, St Peter Walworth, Surrey. It registers in Newington. Cheers, Rick.
