Licensed victuallers asylum??

They were also places that Victuallers went if they liked a little too much drink!! sort of like a drying out clinic. Some inmates even had their sevants with them. I have the surname index for the one at Camberwell Surrey 1841-1891. Sue |

Hi, I found this reference using autosearch which may help: LICENSED VICTUALLERS' ASYLUM (administered almshouses on Old Kent Road, Camberwell). Became the Licensed Victuallers' Benevolent Institution in 1921. There were other references listed - looks like these asylums existed in several places, presumably funded by subscription to provide housing for retired victuallers, or their dependents? Can anybody help. I have an 1881 entry for a 20 year old girl living with her grandmother at a Licensed Victuallers Asylum. The grandmother is an inmate of same. Any help???? Thanks Diane |
