Change of name

can anyone tell me if/how I can find information on changes of name... my family changed their surname during the war but the original certificate has been lost. Any info would be great!! :-)

No real clue Alice but would it have been by deed poll? Some people changed their names from german sounding ones didn't they, so as not to be thought of as "the enemy" or "traitors"?

I guess the nearest solicitor in the area at the time would have dealt with it if it's done in the same way as modern times.

Unfortunately I dont know the date it was changed or the area that they were living in!! I just wondered if anyone knew of a national data base type thing? or am I just clutching at straws?!
