I'm fairly new to this but after reading lots of messages tried www(.)gencircles(.)com - Wonderful First name I put in was my GGGF born in 1844 and I'm now back to 1607! Unfortunately didn't get anywhere with other branches but I'll keep trying. How safe am I to assume the details shown will be correct?

You can't be sure unless you check for your self,Imagine that the person you got your info from hasn't checked the sources, and the person they got it from hasn't checked either, you will be building your tree with out any roots and it will come tumbling down. Steve.

It is very unsafe to assume that the details are correct unless you can get excellent corroborative evidence from the folks who entered the family tree information. By all means use their data as a working hypothesis but don't be surprised when it all collapses at the first fence. I am afraid that the only way you can proceed safely is the old fashioned and 'relatively' secure search for ... grandfather's birth cert ... great grandfather's marriage cert ... great greatfather's birth certificate etc cross checked with data from each census thence back through the parish registers Births Marriages and Deaths. It has been estimated that 30% of family trees are complete rubbish and the further back you go the higher the percentage becomes. Our American cousins seem to be the worst miscreants. If you have not been there yet, have a look at the GENUKI introduction to Family History Research techniques 'Getting Started' http://www.genuki.org.uk

When I first started doing my tree I found what I thought was my grandfather, the career, area and name matched the age was right. I went back to the early 1700's then it all came tumbling down, it wasn't mine. Since then I have verified everything, either by census or certificate.

Hi Christina I made the same mistake and a kind lady on GC who was actually related to the lady I thought was my grandmother put me right. She was very kind about the whole thing and offered to help me in anyway that she could. I even had a birth certificate but it now appears that my grandmother might have been adopted and what I thought was her name, wasn't her name at all. So check, check check. We're all human and can make mistakes. Debbie
