You don't pay anything to look on FreeBMD, don't make the mistake of clicking on the Ancestry.com link. All FreeBMD gives you is the ref for the certificates. To get further info you have to buy the certificate, that's why it is important to make sure you have the right ref.

Thats another thing that i have a query about - the free bmd - when you pay to look further at the details of a person, what does it tell you? Cheryl

Depending on the date of the entry in the index, it may give the mother's surname in the details. I believe that they started that in 1911 or thereabouts. I believe certificates cost from about £7, but it is quite a bit since I ordered one so it may be more. Don't forget that 1837 only covers England and Wales. Paul

It's £7 to get a certificate, so can end up costing a fair bit. Try and make sure you have the right ref first so you get the right one. As said before use the IGI, you may get some good info if you are lucky, depending on the area. Always ask on here too, people will help you if they can, point you in the right direction. Before using 1837online try FreeBMD first. You can look for free, it isn't complete but worth trying before you start paying. Diane

How much does it cost to order copies of certificates? Cheryl x

You could try the IGI, ie the Mormon site (LDS) You use the reference to order the birth cert. and this will then give you the parents. PS this is where it starts getting expensive. lol

Hi, I have just had a go at trying to find relatives on www.1837online.co.uk I managed to find my grandma in the births register, but i just wondered - is there a facility to be able to see their parents, etc online or do you have to take the reference and go and find this information? It said that the district she was born in was selby - so how would i find the documents for this area?? Sorry, I'm really new to all this! :) Any advice would be much appreciated Cheryl x
