Hello, I wonder if anyone can help. My GreatGrandfather was Dutch, his name was Johannes Henrikes Jacobs. I have a copy of his marriage cert, he married an English girl in St Annes, Soho, Westminster in 1872. It gives his fathers name as Johannes Frederick Jacobs. In the 1881 census he is Johannes Jacobs, in the 1901 he is known as Henry Jacobs . What I need to find out is when he came to England, what port he used etc. I have looked on various sites from Cyndis List, but they just seems to deal with Holland to America, not Holland to England. Cyndi's List also has some good Dutch census sites too (and in English) but until I know where/how/when he came over, I cant find out what place he was from in Holland. Does anyone know where they do continental ships lists from the 1800's? Thanks Sandra

Hi Sandra I have the same problem as you, only my Grandfather was a Lithuanian Jew, and apparently he came over in the tale end of the 19th century on a ship from France (family story). I asked Anthony, GC's expert how I might find which ship he came on, and was told that there were ferries then like there are today, so it would be nigh on impossible to find the one! Holland might have been the same, as it is also not too far away. However, I do know that there were many ships that sailed from Holland to America, and some stopped off in England on the way to drop passengers off and pick more up. A good site to look for ships is the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild. I can't remember the exact addy, but if you look it up on Google you will find it. I have spent many many hours looking for his brothers and sister who apparently went to America, without any luck though I'm afraid!!!!! I still don't know what year my Grandfather came to England either!!! Happy hunting! Lisa

Thanks Lisa I didnt realise that the ships could actually be going on to America after dropping passengers off. Thanks for the site details, I'll try that now. Sandra

Sandra, Ancestry have a site with shipping lists. You can look at what they have & someone may be able to do a look up. Pat.
