I have recently ordered two certificates with made up dates and received them ok. Unfortunately I quoted George Augustus and received certificates for George Alfred and George Albert and so paid the full £7 each time. So it appears they don't take too much notice of names either!

Thanks everyone! Why does the GRO insist on making unnecessary work for themselves? I suppose they have to come up with ways of spending that huge amount of money we are all so eager to give them...

Hi I also had this problem. I wanted to order my gt grandfathers death certificate and he died in 1983, i had no idea of his date of death. I found out which district it was registered under and contacted them direct, sent them a letter and a cheque for £7 and the certificate was with me within a week, much quicker than ordering from the GRO! Several times I've ordered certificates online which were of events less than 50 years ago. I put any date that was in the correct quarter. GRO sent me the certificate with no problem each time. However, I've read on other threads on GC that others made a date up and it was not accepted as it was not the correct one! I suppose it depends if you get a jobsworth that processes your order or not!!

Hi Linda, There is no way round this when ordering online. If you ring GRO and place your order by phone, they don't require the exact date of death just the GRO reference??!! Debbie

I've finally tracked down the death of a long lost uncle, and the birth of his son. 1837 Online has given me all the relevant reference numbers... but it doesn't give you the exact date of the birth, death or marriage - and to order certificates post-1854 (ie. 50 years) you have to have the exact date! How can you gain this vital information without having the birth, death or marriage certificate??? HELP, PLEASE!
