How would I find the birth of Pierre Chaplais born 1815 possibly Loire? Just don't know where to start. Thanks

Hi Since nobody else has answered this yet perhaps I could try to point you in some directions. I found some of my French ancestors by joining Rootsweb common interest groups, also by joining Y a h o o groupes in France. It helps if you speak French though. One you might try is geneureetloir@yahoogroupes(.)fr French genealogy records are usually held at the town hall or Marie but you really need to know the exact area. You can look at whether someone is already researching your names by going to Geneanet: http://www(.)geneanet(.)org/ (remove the brackets) and by doing a Google search either of the full name in inverted commas or part of the name. I've been really lucky to have some very helpful French people who have looked up people for me in France. I hope you get some luck. Best wishes Ann

Somewhere, I have a list of French resources. I will try and find them, but if it has not been posted in about 12 hours, contact me direct. Paul

On a similar theme. My Great grandfather was supposedly born in France (British Subject) I have no idea where iin France. No trace of him at GRO. Any ideas how to find his birth. I also suspect his parents may have stayed and died in france but, again no idea where. Any ideas on this? Ann Glos
