I have a rellie on the 1901 which says "husband at sea", where can I find him? I've looked on the 1901 for his name but no luck..are there any other records I can look at. TIA Caroline

Have you tried the military records site?

Age old problem, I'm afraid. I was looking through the 1851 census film for Littlehampton, Sussex and the enumerator had added a comment saying that he estimated that '180 seamen and master mariners in 45 vessels....absent from this place'.

Linda Does that mean if they were in the RN then they will be listed somewhere?? Or is there a list of ships and crew elsewhere so that I might be able to determine what ship he was on? Regards Caroline

You can do a vessel search on the menu at the side on 1901 census homepage. You will however need the name or a rough idea of the ship. And only those actually in the harbour were enumerated: if he was out of port or on a fisherman's boat you won't have much luck . KIM

Thanks but the problem is I don't know what vessel he was on. That's what I want to find out...any ideas? Caroline

I don't know which area your folk lived but in West Sussex Record Office they have a card index of people, filed alphabetically by surname, detailing which vessels the men worked on, and dates they were signed-on. This was just mariners, not R.N. I think. Not sure which period they cover, - maybe your area will have something similar.
