I was born in Essex too - Seven Kings, Ilford - but that is now part of the London Borough of Redbridge. Jan.

Yes, Lynn, Stratford is now London and not Essex. I have a similar problem with another of my grandparents who was born in Walthamstow, Essex (now London).

I believe parts of Poplar were also classed as Bromley, Middlesex. On my grandmother's census entries she is always described as being born in Stratford, Essex. Nowadays, Stratford would be described as being in London not Essex, don't you think?

Hi Roger Oh! Hadn't thought of that... A number of my Duttons had their BDM's registered in Bromley, Kent - but there are a few crucial births that I haven't been able to find. Consequently, I got rather excited when I saw Bromley, Middlesex! Guess I'll have to do yet more digging.

Hi Linda could they mean Bromley by Bow, which is over the other side of the water in N. London Roger from sunny Sussex

I have been searching in vain for my Dutton ancestors, who were apparently born in 'London, Middlesex'. I've just come across some other Duttons on the 1881 census who were apparently born in 'Bromley, Middlesex'. Was Bromley really in Middlesex? I thought Middlesex was north of the Thames... However, if this is correct it's quite exciting as my grandfather was born in St Mary Cray, which is near Bromley...
