Hi Debbie. I have the name Gerrard in my family. There was a famous Gerrard in the 1881 census (not related) who was a Naturalist. He later turned up as a taxidermist. My ex partner is a keen collector of taxidermy and has some of Gerrard's pieces. Completely useless information but thought I would share it :-) Mel

Debbie! Don't think of them as strange, just as pioneers. Remember it was about that time that rather adventurous naturalists were travelling to far flung parts of the world to bring back seeds and so on which were then used to establish places like Kew Gardens and some of the truely great gardens that we enjoy today.

the following quote may help "the investigation of nature is an infinite pleasure ground where all may graze" T H Huxley 1871 so i reckon it meant then what it does now.

I have found an entry for a relation on the 1881 census that states occupation as naturalist. Does anyone know what that would have been in th 1880s. Thanks Debbie
