I found A Great Genealogy reference site with links to over 200k genealogy sites (don't let that be intimidating). It's broken down in the most comprehensive way i've seen. I spent 10 minutes looking for a site reference to Ireland and within 5 minutes I was linked up to a site dealing with what I was looking for even know all I was armed with was a first and last name, year of birth and looking for somewhere called killcock,Ireland..... Yes I am a true newbie! If you haven't used Cyndi's List, give it a try. Cyndi's List -site addr is: www.cyndislist.com hope this helps. Ali from Cali |

That mirrors my thoughts exactly, hence the amount of work i have put into some reference threads on another site. I have tried again on here but it isn't really for me. |

Oh Glen, How I agree with you. Back in the early days of Genes I wanted to help people so much, and was on the Tips Board all the time. But now, I really have grown more than weary of repeating the same old information time after time, for it to disappear into the Genes Black Hole to the point where I am rarely on here these days. I know that like you, I am not the only one, but it does seem a pity that Genes cannot use this expertise that people have, and are willing to give for free, in a much more user friendly way. I have a lot of knowledge of Irish Tracing, having done so much myself and I and many others have spent much time and effort in trying to help people with this difficult area of tracing, and if only people would type in Irish or Ireland into the search box, they would soon find some of the answers to their problems. Not just about the Irish either but about any Genealogy or Family history subject. I think that maybe the time has come for me to help exclusively those that are really interested, and that is obviously not on this Genes site for me. I suspect that this conversation may well be my swan song now, as I just cannot be bothered any more with the site. I needed a final push and I think this is it! I really do feel now that I do not have this precious time to waste any more. Don't often rant myself, but now I've done it, I feel better! Thank you Glen for putting it into perspective for me. Hi Janet Even the getting started section is buried away nowadays. It is far easier to place a question on the boards and get the answers. I did take a break from GR after the recent troubles, sadly when i returned i found it quite tiresome to see the same subjects cropping up on an almost daily basis. It is sad to see a thread dissappear from page 1 and be forgotten. I haven't got the patience to repeat the answers that i once gladly typed out several times in a week. I don't think i'm unique in that respect either. I do understand that people start researching all the time, they need help as did i, but why do GR insist on making the boards THE only easy source of info for both new and not so new researchers? As GR try to become a 'one stop shop' by having bmd records etc (and carefully avoiding mention that you can get them FREE elsewhere) they are depriving people of the greatest assett of the site. Where else can you get instant access to hundreds of years of experience of research? Without constant nudges the really useful threads on civil registration and missing census districts, records offices and parish registers etc just get lost. The threads posted on here are far more use than a £30 book from WH Smiths and are more detailed too. Sorry Rant over. Glen |

Glen I heartily aggree that Genes should have a special 'Reference Section' for all those good tips made by members over the years, but Genes seem incapable of running anything like that. Funny, you would think they would draw on the expertise of Family History Societies who know exactly how to pull information together for other people to use. Oh well, under the present circumstances, I suppose that people will just have to keep reinventing the wheel which I have to say I find a waste of time. Janet |

Janet Granted a duplicated thread can be a nuisance, however as i'm sure you will have noticed many questions regarding researching any subject whether it be Irish research, full age on a marriage cert or how to search the bmd index for exampe have been asked and answered several times before. Not everyone is aware of (or uses) the thread search and will post a question that has been asked dozens of times. The pool of knowledge shared by GR members would often be better displayed in a 'reference' section. Threads giving good sound advive about specific topics could be posted for all to use and learn from but GR will never do so.So like satellte TV, there will always repeats whereever you look. Glen |

Is there much point in having a second thread doing the rounds on Irish Genealogy websites? Far better to keep the one going that has been going for some time. See 'Irish research tips, please add thanks' thread put on by Joy Kentish Maid a long time ago. All mainly websites culled from people who have already taken a lot of trouble to ensure that you have help on your Irish Relatives. Another way of finding your own websites is to GOOGLE, GOOGLE and GOOGLE again. Janet |
