Lindsey, If the people in question came from a small-ish village then it's quite possible that all the Brown girls were related, but not necessarily from the same family, they may have been cousins etc; communities were quite insular and families quite often intermarried... Paul

Thanks Judith - I have marriage certificates ordered so fingers crossed they reveal something. Im quite reassured to think its not just my family that seem to have had frighteningly similar taste in women! Lindsey PS I like the typo too!

Hello Lyndsey, I also have a number of instances of marriages between cousins, and of two brothers marrying two sisters I thunk it probably was quite common. As to tracing your Brown family, unless they had an uncommon christian name its gong to be difficult. Have you seen the marriage certificates to check whether they have the same father's name - that might at least tell you if they were from the same family and give you a group of names to look for on a census. Good hunting Judith PS the 'thunk' was a typo but I rather like it!

I have come across something in my tree thats puzzling me. Both my Great Great Grandad, Great Grandad and his brother were all married to women with the surname Brown. Any ideas as to whether the Browns are likely to be from the same family? Was it common for families to marry so closely? Maybe its happened in your tree. All marriages took place in 1880 - 1901. If so any tips on identifying the Browns - its such a common name Im struggling! Any help appreciated as Im running out of ideas! Lindsey
