I found my emigrant family travelling to Australia on the Victoria Public Records Office website; http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/ Having HUGE problems trying to find them coming back to the UK, though, sometime between 1873 and 1876.

Hi All, A very valuable site that is going to disappear at the end of this year, 2004, is the following site: http://www.firstfamilies2001.net.au/ This was a government history project that allowed those people in Australia to place their family trees onto the internet. More specifically the trees of the first family members to Australia and their offspring. It is a searchable database and it is free. Happy Hunting Paul

hia all i am hoping someone out there may be able to help me, i have been searching for my brother for the past five years and have located him in record/paper form only. have come to the conclusion that he does not reside in the uk. is ther e any way for me to find out if he emigrated to australia or if he emmigrated at all? would be grateful for any hints tips or shreds of info. thanks for reading . tracy in liverpool. uk.

The New South Wales Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages has fantastic free online indexes for births (1788-1905), Deaths and Marriages (1788-1945). Many migrants moved between Tasmania and NSW, so this site might be worth a look. Go to http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

Hello I would suggest Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild, try www.immigrantships.net/index.html I found some people on there with my family surname who sailed from Italy in the late 1940's to Australia. From there I looked at the National Archives of Australia, which has info on immigrants and lists of people entering the country.

Another good site to search is the National Archives, the address is http://www.naa.gov.au/ Good luck with your search John Chance

www.licolnshire.gov.uk has alist of nearly 2000 convicts sent to Australia,Tasmania,& Bermuda. Just follow the archives link. Hey its free. Richard Ager.

Hello Simon, I have the LDS Australian Vital Records, they do say they have Tasmania 1803/1899 on them, although I don't suppose they are 100% Let me have the name and I'll look it up for you. Diane

WHOOPEE! At last I have found people I can help! Everyone has been so good to me on this site I am delighted!! Where to start? 1. I'd suggest Gen Forum on your search engine and when you locate it go to COUNTRIES then Australia. Ask on this site with a plea for help to Gordon Beach. He's a boomer and has several discs which I hope will be helpful. If not he will probably advise what to do if you ask. The good news is that's free and Gordon is very fast!. He found my folks who emigrated mid 1880s and tracked them to 1985 Births, deaths and marriages and it was all on my computer after I returned from shopping. 2. Try http://www.maxi.com.au/ It's a pay site if you find the names you want but even I can use it and I am compter illiterate! You may find names/shipping records etc. 3. Also try the names of the names of the various Australian states in your browser with the words Public Record Office included - Victoria is particularly good. Hope this gets you started! I've just found, through someone else's research on the internet, that my gr-gr-gr-grandfather (whom I always assumed died before 1840 as he's not on any censuses) actually died in 1890 in Tasmania. I've e-mailed the owner of the site to see if they have any more details, but in the meantime (or in case he doesn't get back to me) are there any websites that deal with emmigration to Australia (ship passenger lists etc) or any sites with Australian census/BMD details etc ? (I obvioaulsy don't know whether his emmigration was penury or by choice !) Simon
