Has any one any tips on how to trace my grandfather's army service? I have no idea of when or where he served but remember seeing a photograph of him in uniform when I was a child, although my mother doesn't remeber the photograph. He was born in 1901 so I guess there is a possiblity he served in WW1, but unlikely he served in WW2. I read that a good place to start is with local regiments, but he was a Londoner, & I understand there were a number of London regiments & wouldn't know where to begin. The fact that he was a printer by trade probably wouldn't be much help either. Any tips would be appreciaited.

Elizabeth Try looking at the Public Record Office online catalogue - PROCAT - under your grandfather's surname ... it might give you some clues. Regs Jane

Go to your local library - I can't remember the proper title but mine has a thin book published by the PRO which deals solely with tracing Military Ancestors. They do one each for Army and Navy. They also have Tracing your Ancestors in the PRO which has loads of info on the records that are held at Kew, Military and otherwise. Sue
