I have found that my g grandfather may of possibly fought in the first world war in the North Staffordshire Regiment. What are the chances of getting hold of records. I am hoping it may have some information to confirm this is my G Grandfather. I know alot of records around this time were destroyed through bombing. Are they at the Public Records Office???

Yes they are at the national archives in Kew. you are right that the majority of the records were destroyed by bombing in WW2 but it is worth a look just incase, about 35 - 40 % survived i think. also they have the medal role which has about 6.5 million entries just for WW1 so your G Grandfather is more than likely on this. if you dont already have a readers ticket make sure you take some ID with you such as a Passport or photo drivers License

Just the faintest chance your ancestor may be in "Who Was Who" as he won the Military Cross. Worth a look. Will be available at you local big library. Look for the year you think he was awarded it and +a few years before and after. I found a few army people this way. Janet

Soibhan, have sent you an e mail but i ll post the same here. The TNA (PRO) are putting the WW1 medal role online and that they have already put surnames with A and B on and may well have put C on there, the address is www[.]documentsonline[.]pro[.]gov[.]uk remove brackets. Kevin

have just checked for you on the web site but they haven't put surnames with C on there yet. According to their timetable C and D should be on March 2004, so it could be on there anytime in the next few weeks.
