Lisa J in California

Lisa J in California Report 30 Mar 2004 19:07

25 years ago I started researching my family (stopped and started again, as time allowed). We bought our computer three years ago and I started finding sites, information, etc. Last fall I joined GC; someone told me how to use google. EVERY NIGHT I sat here, trying different variations of my (brickwall) ancestor's name, presumed birthplace, family names, etc. Had a few successes, but nothing to help me find proof of his birthplace. One time I was SO frustrated about not finding the proof I needed that was going to put all of the information away forever, and just concentrate on other branches. Several GC people encouraged me not to, so I left the paperwork where it was and started researching other lines. I had to stop researching about two months ago, due to "family issues". I am now able to resume researching, on a part-time basis. On Saturday night I found I had two free hours and tried one more google search, this time simply entering "Mumford" and Ontario or Canada (don't remember which) and found THREE people who could be from my ancestor's cousin's branch! (I don't have proof of the cousin yet -- I'm about 99% sure that my ancestor and his cousin left England and settled in Ontario.) All three wrote to me on Sunday and we are now in the middle of exchanging information. If I can ever find proof of my ancestor's birthplace, then two of those people are my relatives! We moved to California a long time ago and finding possible relatives near the place where I was born means so much to me. PLEASE don't give up when you are frustrated, just take a break for a while. If you are new to computers and genealogy, try a "google" search: http://www.google(.)com/ [remove ( ) first] Choose advanced search, type in your ancestor's name, county, town, etc. I wish you all the best of luck with researching!
