Tracy I used to live in Bacup, and Stacksteads is a small part of Bacup now. Maybe it was classed as Rochdale many years ago Rachel

Thanks for your replies everyone. On the 1891 census he was with his wife and children at Hardman Street? Bacup, Rossendale. He was a labourer and his wife Ellen was a cotton weaver. The 1871 census might help loads if i only had an address...aarrrggghhhh!!!. Tracey

Tracey, You could look at parish records. You could order them at your local LDS centre. Crista

You might have to search the 1871 census. You're looking for a James of the right age whose father was an engineer called James. Hopefully you won't find too many matches. But you don't know if they were in Accrington or Rochdale or somewhere else. That's a huge amount of census to search. Unless there are indexes already, you might have to put this on ice until Ancestry have done it

Hi Philip, I don't think this is my family as James' father was also James. My James was married in 1878 too. Thanks for looking though Tracey

Hi Crista, Yes i do have the marriage cert. The residence at time of marriage was Blackwood, Stacksteads, Rochdale for the both of them. James' occupation was a cotton operative, i had seen the entry on US 1880 census for a james Ashworth but how could i be sure if thats him? I don't even know what his brothers name was to see if he is on the census anywhere. Tracey

Tracey, Do you have the marriage certificate? That will give you and address from around 1878. Was he in the US in 1880? There is a James Ashworth in Massachusetts working in a cotton mill that fits. Accrington had lots of cotton mills too. Crista

I have a rellie called James Ashworth born 1859/60 in Accrington, Lancs. I've found him on the 1901 and 1891 census but can't find him any earlier! Looked on free BMD for his birth but there are so many James Ashworths in that area it would be impossible to pick the right one. He married in 1878 to a lady called Ellen Sutcliffe but on the 1881 census she is living with her sister Lydia and her son Newton(thats Ellen and James son). Family tale has it that he went to America to find his brother and when he came home Ellen had already had the baby and he had said that he wasn't the father but i think she was pregnant before he went. Turns out that Newton was the only one out of the children they had that was the spit of his father. All i know is that James father was also called James and he was an engineer. Has anyone got any ideas where to look next? I don't know any addresses before 1891 and i can't proceed any further without a birth cert or something. Sorry to ramble but thanks for reading this!!
