My Father is Hallam-Clarke, as was his father, but both are shown as Clarke with Hallam as their middle names on 1837 online. Generally it seems that hyphenated names aren't entered as such so as mentioned you need to be much more flexible with your search

i am having the same problem. The name I am searching is Shaw-Hulme, Shawhulme, Shaw Hulme, even S Hulme i am really struggling it seems that some of the family have Shaw as a middle name and others have it combined into the surname. Their are five brothers and sisters all with different names. theri father was Elias Shaw Hulme but I can't find his birth cert at all. Jackie

How do I search for a hyphenated name on ancestry or BMD? It only seems to give me results for the first part of the name.
