This is the site for the CRO. If you are going to call in I would advise you to book a viewer in advance. They do get very busy. Late night is Wednesday. www(.)northyorks(.)gov(.)uk/libraries/archives/default(.)shtm Jill

Hello Janette Yes St John's in Sleights would be the main church for Eskdaleside/Ugglebanby, it is situated between the twon Hamlets , as Ugglebarnby is the other side of Sleights from Eskdaleside. Think there was a little chapel at Ugglebarnby. Littlebeck is half way up Bluebank and although not far away, does have it's own small chapel,Methodist I think Regards Rod

Thanks Jill If I wanted to view the parish registers would I have to go to North Allerton then? I also need to look at the registers for Wharram Percy and Malton so I will have to make a trip to North Yorks. Jeanette

I'm not sure. I have a copy of the Guide for the County Records Office at Northallerton. If you look at Sleights it says "see Eskdaleside". Looking at Eskdaleside, St John's, Sleights has Christenings 1723 - 1861 on one film and 1767-1769 & 1808-1811 on another. Ugglebarnby has Christenings 1732-1870. On the map, Littlebeck appears to be equidistant from Sleights & Ugglebarnby so that's not a lot of help. Maybe the "locals" can come up with a better answer? Jill

Jill, Rod and Paul Thanks for your answers. I'm reasonably familiar with Sleights - especially the fayre at the Plough Inn! So, if somebody was christened at Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby (IGI) would they have been christened at St. Johns in Sleights? Would this also have been the local church for people living in Little Beck? Jeanette

Straidght forward speaking as we Yorkshire folk do, a dale is a valley and there are many of them in Yorkshire, Wharfedale, Airedale, Littondale, Swaledale to name but a few. So Eskdale is the area inside the watershed of the river Esk OK?

Hi Jeanette I live in Whitby ,4miles from Sleights,Eskdaleside would best be described as a stretched Hamlet that runs between Sleights and the next village of Grosmont. Hope this helps Rod

The parish registers for Eskdaleside cum Ugglebarnby cover St John's, Sleights and Ugglebarnby itself. It is all the same area. Looking at the map, Eskdaleside as such doesn't appear. Sleights and Ugglebarnby are both shown. Hope that helps. Jill

I was reading a post on a message board today which mentioned that Eskdaleside is now known as Sleights. Is this right? I got the impression that the person who posted the message didn't live in this country so I just wanted to check. Jeanette
