I have looked at James Nailard/Napp so many times and could not see that he must have been the illegitimate son of William Napp and an unknown female Nailard. But i'm sure that's what happened. However he can't seem to make his mind up whether he's a Nailard or a Napp. His son has been registered as a Napp, father James Napp, mother Mary Potten and i've now found a baptism entry for same child and father is James Nailard. Doh! Sue.

Sue, I have exactly the same thing on my tree. Born to unmarried parents, but the father accepted paternity and took out a bond agreeing to pay the expenses of the child's upbringing. Later, when this lad was grown, he married under his mother's name, then had various children baptised under one or the other or both names, until finally he used both himself. It was very confusing, but after a lot of research, and luck with surviving records, everything fell into place. Hope you find the evidence you need to probve things one way or another. Best wishes, Carole
