Hi all, I have pop-ups appearing, grey in colour with 'Messenger Service' in the top right hand corner. These are annoying at the best of times, but they're advertising porn :( so would really like to get rid of them. I have the google AND Norton Firewall pop-up blockers activated, but they're still getting through. Any ideas folks? thanks, Karen

Karen: Pop ups are due to spyware that's installed itself on your computer.....use Adaware to remove and then run Adaware once a week or so. You can also uninstall MESSENGER from your program files. Judy

Karen If you are using XP I would not remove anything. Confusingly there are two messengers within windows. Windows messenger, has nothing to do with these popups. They are caused by a windows component called messenger service. This has nothing to do with spyware although you should run ad-aware to help stop the normal ones. The messenger service is of liittle use to most home users ( it's a network admin tool). It is turned on by default. Rarely some software may need it so the best thing is to turn it off. Go to control panel then administritive tools (or performance and maintenance) then services. In the list of programs there is "messenger" click on this and a box appears . Under service status click "stop". Then under "start up type" click "disable" then click "apply" and exit. Another route # Click on the "Start" button. # Right-Click on "My Computer"(or just right click on my computer icon on desktop if you have one) # Choose "Manage" from the menu that appears. # In the left column Highlight "Services and Applications" # In the right column Double-Click on "Services". # Double-Click on the service called "Messenger". # Click the "Stop" button to stop the service. # Change the "Startup Type:" to "disable" # Click "Apply". # Click "OK". # Close "Computer Management" Bob
