I've just recieved a copy of a marriage certificate for my grandparents marriage in 1943. I've noticed that my grandfathers surname is different to the surname given for his father? Does this mean that my grandfather was possibly adopted or that his mother got married a second time? Am new to all this. Thank you. Elaine

It's possible that he was illegitimate, but knew who his father was. It's also possible that his mother remarried and he used his step-father's name. If he was adopted then he should have named his adoptive father. Does it say father deceased at the time of the marriage? Carole
