Claire . . . . . I'm not sure, this is the nearest I could find . . . . . EARTH STOPPER A person employed to close up the entrances of a fox's earth before the hunt began Or it could relate to the contruction trade. . . . An other thought do you know his Father's trade that might give you an idea ? MIKE.

Somewhere on a website I have seen a dictionary of unusual words if you can find it that may help. Many years ago the spoil from mine workings was pulled along the shafts and tunnels by men, women and children. I suspect that may be the trade you are looking for.

Thank you everyone for your help.. Paul,,it makes me feel very sad to think little children would have had to drag sacks of earth through the darkness,,it surely was very dangerous,,,poor things,

Hi Claire, I think it may be an early form of "dragline". A large bucket type piece of equipment pulled across the ground by horses to move soil, most likely for road work as suggested by Isabel. Modern ones are huge and used in open cut mining. Type "dragline" into Google and you'll find a picture of one. Regards Keith F. Sunny Australia
