Thanks Sue and Stan. I really do believe he is the right chap, the right time, place, parents and surname - but will also keep an eye out for a baptism to confirm my convictions! If anyone comes across a baptism for Sainthill Lindsey, son of Arthur and Sarah Matilda, on or after August 1845, Marylebone area, please let me know! Thanks, Rosi

I have a James Napp that I spent hours looking for a birth reg for - he married had 18 children and died in his 80's. He was recorded as Male and as he is the only one with the right name at the right time in the right place right ma and pa, he has to be mine - so I guess you have the right chap! Sue.

Hi Rosi Births had to be registered within six weeks. Those who died were not always given a name. I have come across a case in my own family where the death was registered in the quarter before the one in which the birth was registered, i.e. the death was registered immediately so as to be able to bury the child, but the birth was registered at the end of the six weeks to avoid a fine, or maybe on receiving a query from the Registrar. If that is not the explanation, then the parents must just have disagreed about the name. If you are lucky, and the child survived, there may be baptism, and they would have to agree on a name for that. regards Stan

I have found a birth ( after much looking) for one of mine - well to the right parents anyway, and at the right time for the one for whom I was searching. Prob. is that the registration shows 'male' - as does the cert.. The babe is not listed as a death in the same quarter - So - can I assume it was 'my guy' but he was either not expected to live at the time, or they named him later and it just somehow didn't make it to the registers? Anyone know the answer to this? Rosi
