Was it normal practice if the mother registered the birth for the child to be classed illegitimate or coincidence? I have noticed on various certificates that this has been the case even when the mother is married. Pat |

Hi Pat, I do hope both you and Gordon are well...... As far as I am aware, and I am talking about about after the official statutory records 1855+. If they were married, the marriage date and place would be recorded on the certificate. If they were not, both parents would have to be present to register the birth and it would still be recorded as illigitimate as they were not married. I hope that makes sense and answers your question. Remember, I do have the 1881 census for Scotland if you need any look ups. Kind regards Margaret |

Hello Margaret Thank you as always for your invaluable help. Lovely to hear from you, I expect you are still as busy helping to find ancestors and where possible unite families. Gordon sends his regards we are communicating with cousins but some of the older generation are at the moment a bit reticent understandable of course after 60 years of not knowing his excistence (and he not knowing of theirs) it came as a shock.
