Thank you all for replying SIMON Trust the banks to have it their way. KIM That would have made a short year and before GMT with London being 1 hr different to say Bristol the ordinary uneducated folk must have been in total confusion. BOB Thanks for the info on the web site. I am not quite sure what to make of the sheep though and will check it out later today when my son gets back from the Lan party (computer party 1000 computers networked) today Bye for now Pat

For a free program which does all kinds of date conversions go to: http://www.stokepoges.plus.*com/calendar.htm (take out the *) For a (very) full and clear explanation on the subject which has to be understood by anyone going back before 1752 go to: http://www.genfair.*com/dates.htm (take out the *) For those like me who have trouble remembering yeterday see below: Memory All computers have to have a certain amount of memory. This is available in two formats: RAMs or ROMs, and which you choose is down to personal preference. A lot of people will make jokes about 8 RAM being 8 male sheep, but these people are stupid and have no sense of humour. To set the record straight: 8 RAM is not 8 male sheep, but four male sheep. They are internally doubled by the processor. That’s what DX2 stands for. The "D" is the ancient something word for sheep, the "X" is the symbol for multiply and the "2" means 2 (as 2 usually does). These sheep are plugged into the motherboards S.I.M.M. sockets (Sheep Interface Memory Module). Female sheep are not normally used for memory due to their tendency to overheat and explode. Experts believe they have solved this problem with the introduction of E.D.O. (ewes don’t overheat) RAM. Bob

I know exactly what you mean (although I've only got anywhere near that far back with one part of my tree). I remember reading somewhere as well (although I can't remember the details) that England, Scotland and Wales changed to the new calendar at different times so for a while there was disparitybetween them; until an act of parliament brought them into line (incidentally, the financial institutions complained about the loss of money they would incur by the implementation of this act and so it was agreed that they would be given a few weeks lead in and that they would change on 5 April - and their calendar start date has stayed the same ever since, hence the 'financial year' that we're familiar with).

Hi everyone, All the old hands will probably know this but perhaps not the newbies. I have just been sent this info it is as follows. Dates Before 1752 the first day of the New Year was 26th March so, for example 25th March 1750 would have been followed by 26th march 1751. This system continued until the calendar was changed in 1751 so that 31st December 1751 was followed by 1st January 1752. All events before 1752 that occurred between 1st janary and 25th March in a given year would, according to our modern calender, have occurred a year later than actually recorded at the time. What with our rellies being tricky elusive little monkeys and the calendar being tricky too it's enough to turn you to drink. So just be aware and good hunting. Pat
