If you put "nurse sms" into Google, one thing it finds is an Ancestry message board - this is one of the replies on there: "It appears to be the statistical classification added at head office and means Sub(sidiary) Medical Service The actual doctors are 'proper' Medical, and everyone else is SMS. Not all nurses were trained professionally or at all, so the older a lady is, the more likely to be a 'practical nurse' who just picked it up as she went along."

On the1881 Census on LDS site, next to the occupation of "Nurse" there is (SMS). Does anyone know if this means something or is just a reference? Thanks Sue
