The usual reasons why a gate or lock was named was either after the lock keeper, someone who built or helped to build it, or like my ancester John Worsfold there was a dispute about money being owed to him by the canal company and the most likely reason the gate was named after him hense Worsfold Gate. Have just looked up my map pf this area and it looks very much as though this area is the navigable rivers of the Stort and Lea which runs down the Lea Valley and Feakes Lock is about 5 miles s of Sawbridgeworth on the R Stort. Janet

There are pictures of it here http://www.tuesdaynightclub.*co.uk/tour_00/LS4a.html (remove *) Your best bet is to find an enthusiasts group - put "lee and stort" into Google. Perhaps try this one http://www.waterways.org.uk/branch_new/lee_stort/

Do you mean Sawbridgeworth which is Hertfordshire and probably the Grand Union Canal? There is a lot written about canals and the people working on the various types of canal boat. Do not know offhand what the websites might be, but try putting in Grand Union Canal or Sawbridgeworth+Canals into a google search and see what comes up. There is no county of Sawbridgeshire. Your local library will have a section on canals of Britain. Janet

I know this is a strange post fo a genealogy site but my family seem to have been a family of boatmen. So far working the mdland canals. I've just found a FEAKES lock in Sawbridgeshire and wondered if any enthusiasts would know how I can find out how this Lock was named. Seemed a bit of a coinceidence.
