Thought I'd just bring to your attention an excellent article that I've just read, it's in the months (April) edition of ANCESTORS magazine, which I hadn't read before but spotted in WH Smith's today (It's published by The National Archives). The article concerns illegitimacy, and that in many cases in the 19th century specifically, having a birth certificate with no fathers name does NOT mean that there's not one listed on the parish records. On those records, where it states "father reputed to be..." this is usually pretty accurate. It goes on to state that county records offices may hold copies of the parish list of "bastardy bonds" and also that in many cases the wayward father would have been hauled before the quarter sessions and therefore there may be surviving records of these. With renewed conviction I shall now be going to view the parish records for my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather to see what I can find !

That's intresting Paul. Looks like I've got a bit of searching to do then as some of my wayward ancestors had more than one illegitimate child. Must be in the genes as I've never bothered geting married, although I have been with my partner for 20 years. lol Jeanette

Hi there Why not try a2a(.)org(.)uk Click on "search the database" and then put the name of the person you are looking for in the Keyword section and then scroll down to the Count Records Office that you think that the bastardy documents are being held. Put dates into the boxes and click on the search button. This should bring up several hits of the name you are looking for. Bastardy claims are made at the Quarter Session of the Counrts, so click on any of these that you find and you may find the one that you want. happy hunting. Mary
