I have a marriage cert where the father is not named and the daughter lived with him she was only 2 months illegitimate , I think she did not name him as she was really a cousin of the groom but did not want this record to show it. KIM |

It is usual to assume that they are illegitimate but not always. My ggrandad put no father on his marriage cert. but I eventually found his father and mother all legitimately married. As my ggrandad went into the w/house at the latest at the age of 4 (why I have yet to find out) I can only assume he had forgotten his father's name or didn't know it. |

There could also be some court orders for help. Worth looking into. Irene |

I have a similar situation with a Gt Gt Gt Grandfather. However I'm going to check the parish records (tomorrow), as for "base born" children it often states "father reputed to be...", which although not 100% accurate is perhaps as good as it's likely to get. |

Thats what I've always assumed, although I've just found out that my grandmother, who's father is not named on her marriage certificate so I thought was illegitimate, was actually disowned by her family for becoming pregnant, so now I'm not sure if it was because of this that she did not name him. |

I've just received a copy of one of my descendant's marraige certificates and the bride's father's name isn't there. Where the details should be, there's a line and also a line where his occupation should be. Am I to assume that the father is unknown? Thanks for any help on this matter. Julie |
