Aldbury - Herts

One of my names that I have looked up on freecenrootsweb, which on the 1881 census gave place of birth as Aubury, Herts. now says 'Hertfordshire - Aldbury (originally Hertfordshire - Aubury). Can anyone tell me if this is the one near Tring as we visited there a few weeks ago and none of the locals were aware of a change of name in the past. Could it just have been misspelt on the 1881 census? Gill

With no local knowledge of it I think you could safely assume that it was a transcription error. Was the 'wrong' name on the 1881 census on line? They have done a superb job, but with the best will in the world the writing is often very difficult to read! Anne

Hello Anne Yes, the Aubury was an 1881 census online but I thought it was unusual for the 1891 freecen to actually put 'Aldbury originally Aubury' Perhaps I should try to find them on a previous census but there birth years go back to about 1812 so they may have moved before the censuses. Gill

Gillian, Sorry to complicate matters, there is also an Albury in Hertfordshire near Much Hadam. Bob

I used to live near Aldbury, Tring, and it was always pronounced ( to my knowledge) without the d. Try it! As an aside, Aldbury is where many films' outside shots were made, including 'Dance with a Stranger' which I think was about Ruth Ellis? The stocks on the village green used to pop up regularly on TV too.

Thanks Helen, I'm beginning to think it is the same place. Thanks for the other info about the village - it is very picturesque.
