If you live within reach of a main library or archive you should be able to search the GRO index in fiche or film for free! Anne

Jayne If you know roughly the date he died, you could go to 1837 online. THis site has all the indexes for births, deaths & marriages. If you click on the resourse centre on the left of the screen & then go to the bit where other websites addresses are listed it will be on there. It's pay per view, costs about 10p a sheet (but I stand to be corrected on that one). It gives the names of the person who died in each qtr of the year. Once you find the correct person, it will give you his age at death, which district his death was registered under, the vol & pg number of the entry. You can then order the certificate online via the ONS site (click on order a certificate on the 1837 site). A certificate costs £7 if you know the district, the vol & pg no. You can order the certificate without finding out district, etc but it will cost £11.50 & you can't do it online. The ONS website can give you more information about that. Hope some of this helps.
