Hello I have just got the Southampton 1871 census, and started searching for my great grandmother Rose Houghton. I have her marriage certificate which says her name is Rose and the 1881 and 1891 census both say Rose. Her father was Henry which I found on 1871 but living with him was Rosa ages work out ok. The mother it says is Sarah Harvey but in 1881 and 1891 it says Susan. Also the only marriage I have found for Henry is to Susan Abraham and living with Henry and Sarah in 1871 is Emma Abraham which I presume is Sarahs sister. So do you think it really is Susan Abraham and perhaps Rose was sometimes called Rosa. I just wanted to ask other peoples opinions. Thank you so much Debbie

I think you have to allow for transcription errors unless you actually have the census pages. Some of the writing on the sheets is atrocious so its a nightmare for the transcriber. Christina

and in fact you have to allow for transcription errors even if you do have the pages, because (except for 1841) the info was copied into the books from loose forms

The enumerators went round with books at the time and then it was copied into the census sheets which we see today , the enumerators books weren't kept. So chances are the mistake could have been made when the books were copied all those years ago....I have a Lewis entered as Louise ....male ...and that is on the original 1901 census image page! KIM
