Can anyone tell me, at a cemetry do they have records of who is were, can i go and ask for example 'have you got any Houghton's?' and they could say plot 118, or do i have to trawl through the cemetry reading headstones as i go. sorry to appear thick but it's something i've not done before!

If you look on the local council website, they will usually have a cemetary department and you can phone or email them making your query.

Hi Carol My local cemetery is very helpful, as long as I can tell them the date of death, the persons name and their last known address ie everything off the death certificate they can tell me if they were buried there and give me the details of where the plot is. Your best bet is to contact the local council for the area you are interested in and they should be able to put you in touch with the local cemetery. Good luck hunting. Karen

My local cemetery is very good. You can go into the cemetery office with just a surname and they will print out details of all burials and cremations of people with that name and it gives date of interment, address and plot number. It even gives details of plots in the old cemeterey which was used prior to the present one. The staff are very helpful so I'd say give it a go.

Just as an addition to this thread, how do you know which cemetry people are buried?? Eg. Ihave a number of rellies from Chesham, Bucks there are a few churches there...do I have to contact all of them to see if my rellies are there? TIA Caroline

Julia - I think you will find its the Parks and Leisure Department, Broxtowe Borough Council, Beeston. If you ring, ask them to put you through to the department that deals with the cemeteries in the area, and hopefully if you can give them some dates and names they might be able to help you. Jacqui
