"Sharks" in Genealogy?

I know some people get upset at not getting a response from their email enquiries, let alone a courteous 'bye, bye'. However, I have received a couple of enquiries about names that have very little to do with my main tree - they are some distant cousin's spouse! I do reply saying I cannot help but I can imagine some don't as they have nothing really to say. I am thinking of constructing a 'courteous' standard letter for those occasions. Also, not everyone checks their emails all the time!

I am sure I must not be the only person to have noticed this but when I started out on this "hobby" many years ago it seemed to me that there was less of the lets "charge" to more of the "lets help"! Nearly every site (e.g ancestary.com) that now keeps popping up wants you to subscribe to it, which you believe from all the of hipe is going to be a great source to you. Hooked!!! I know of many new comers who have been shocked by how much money you CAN spend without getting much back. Is everybody jumping on the band wagon? I must add too that I wish more people who reply to a connection on email via genesconnected would be slightly more curteous..a nice "thank you" or "bye" would be a start!! P.S It is not in the not replying it is when they Do reply and are so curt. A thank you costs nothing!
