Just another quick tip - if someone sends you a file and you don't know what program to use to open it 1. save the document (to my documents etc) 2. right click on the file and select "Properties" 3. determine from this the file extension (ie. its ".DOC" or ".ZIP" etc). 4. If it's not obvious what it requires, post the FULL filename "something.something" on here and I'm sure someone will tell you !!!

wHEN MY attachments didn't open it was because the security tab was set too "high" on outlook express I changed it back to medium and now they open o.k. Go to tools menu and select "options" look for the security tab at the top ,click on it and see if there isa check tick mark in the box under virus protection which says sometihng like "do not allow attachments to be opened or saved in case of virus" if your sure content is safe and have anti virus scanned it you will be ok, you can allways put it bacl again . click apply and o.k. Sue: Paul is correct, Winzip is essentail and an invaluable tool.....it will also work well pasted the 21 day trial period. Go to: http://www.winzip(.)com/downwzeval.htm - Remove the ( ) in the address - and click on EVALUATION VERSION. You'll then be directed to another page; here click on DOWNLOAD Winzip 9.0 EVALUATION VERSION. The download should begin. Install when download is done and then try to open the file you have been having problems with by RIGHT clicking on it and clicking on OPEN WITH WINZIP. If that doesn't open it just could be that it's a PDF file that needs to be opened with a different program, Acrobat, which is also a free download. Judy

Personally I think WinZip is ESSENTIAL. it's an invaluable tool. If you use it a lot, and begin to feel guilty, pay up, if not, keep using it !

Sue you only need Winzip if they are sending the images in zip format. The zip format is used to compress files but broadband users really dont need to do it. Judy says that more than one attatchment causes the problem but I haven't found this. My e mails open up multiple image attatchments no problem. You need to find out what type of file they are sending you. If it was a PDF file for example you would need Acrobat to view it. Bob

I'm not Judy lol, but I can reassure you that winzip will continue to work after the 21 days you just get a prompt up asking you to agree to the trems and conditions.. it doesnt just stop working as some tools do after the trial period.

Judy - are you saying on a previous thread that the free trial version of Winzip will work forever without me getting billed if I install it?????? You tried to help me with this un-opening attachment thing some while ago but after reading the terms and conditions when coming to install the Winzip I backed out cos it said i'd be billed $29 after 21 days..... Not being able to open what appear to be simple attachments, ie copies of certs and pages from 1837 that people have kindly sent me is driving me nuts!! Thanks for all your help... Sue
