Freebmd are rapildy extending towards the present and some records are on there for 1908 or so, so it's worth looking up to about 1910. Still a lot of gaps pre-1900 though, but all credit to the transcribers beavering away.

Well done Elaine. Exciting, isn't it? Did you check for the marriage on FreeBMD before going onto 1837online? It is free and you can save your 1837 credits for looking up info not on FreeBMD. Although they only have entries up to around 1903, so you are probably looking at dates later than that! Sorry if you already know this...but since you are a 'newby' I thought you might not be aware.

It's such a weird feeling isn't it, finding out something you never knew and I've just discovered something else!! had a quick look on 1837 online and have found an entry for a marriage for both names which took place just a couple of months before my mum was born!! since I started my search just two weeks ago, I've been hooked but it just gets better and better although I know I'll probably come back down to earth with a bump sometime. still I appear to have made a good start so far! thanks Elaine

Hello. amazing how the simple things please. that excitment of gettinga cert! Marriage cert next and that will give you their ages and addresses at marriage. Be aware that the information can be wrong though, as in the case of my illegimate grandfather who gave his uncle Charles' name as his father - I did already know he was illegimate fortunately or I would have been completely thrown. Hopefully you will not have this problem. Happy hunting

Hi Elaine I suggest you look for their marriage certificate first, because that should give their ages which will help you establish the years they were born, together with their father's names. Good luck.

I'm so excited, I've just this morning received a copy of my mum's birth certificate and its the right one! For the first time I now know my grandmothers name! I already knew her fathers details which is how I know its the right certificate, but what do I do now??? Do I look for birth certificates of my mothers parents, or do I search for their marriage certificate first. many thanks Elaine
