Oh yes, definitely backup first !!! But it should be OK, I've done this loads of times.

Thanks, Paul. I'll try that at home (backing up first in case it goes pear shaped).

Brian, I have a similar problem with an illegitimate child. However, I've found the following trick useful in the past (for when I've had children listed out of date order and wanted to alter it, but the same principle applies). don't DELETE the child, UNLINK the child, making a note of the RIN number first. Then, once they're unlinked, you can "add a child", select the option that says something like "add a child that already exists" and then put in the RIN number (you can also search by name at this point). Hope that makes sense, I've written that from memory as my PAF stuff is on my home PC.

Thanks Karen. There are a lot of descendents hanging on the child and if I delete him I'll lose those as well. Can I enter another marriage to UNKNOWN for the mother then edit the relationships?

Karen....I would have to guess yes, that would apply to the zip files as well. Just right click and change the option in the properties. The read only feature is there to protect your files from someone changing them. Judy

In my PAF tree I had a lady with an illegitimate child. She subsequently married and I entered her husband. Now the child is showing the husband as the father. How can I unlink the child from the husband whilst leaving him as the child of the wife and "UNKNOWN"?

Find the file that is telling you read only....RIGHT click on it and a box will appear.....at the bottom click on PROPERTIES. A box appears again, at the bottom unclick READ ONLY and then click apply or OK. Judy
