How did you know your correct address?

Looking at the 1851 census I have noticed that the numbers of the houses are listed by those that were occupied. i.e. No 53 Smith family no 54 Jones family then house unoccupied followed by no 55 Green family. It happens time and time again sometimes two or more houses are noted as unoccupied. I find this very strange what if someone moved into 1 of the unoccupied houses what number would they use. Does anyone have any ideas. Pat

I always thought that when the numbers were all taken then the unoccupied "houses" actually referred to households i.e. rooms for rent with one large house, available to another family to live in, as opposed to a physically seperate building.

If you are looking at the numbers in the very first column of the census sheet, they are not house numbers but record numbers. The house numbers are put into the second, wider column, along with the rest of the street address. An awful lot of houses didn't have numbers at all, just XXX Street. Jan.

No junk mail, no gas bill, electric bill, phone bill, credit card bill etc. etc. Wish no one knew my house number!

As always I can depend on answers from you all. ZOE. I never thought of that. I must get my head into gear and remind myself that in the 1800's things were a lot different to now. JAN. the only numbers are in the first row, 2nd row contains street names only so that your theory could be a possible answer. HELEN No there is a nice thought in actual fact BLISS. When my postman delivers and says"only bills I am afraid" I keep telling him Bill lives up the road but to no avail LOL Thank you all for the info Pat

If you check the headings to the columns on the census sheet, I think you'll see its more than just a theory. Jan.

Helen, It won't stop the bills coming, but if you register with the Mail Preference Service then you won't get any more junk mail. Go to www.mpsonline(.)org(.)uk - remove the () from this address. Rick.

Jan I believe you. Unfortunatley I cannot make out that heading not even with a magnifying glass. Although I said theory I obviously used the wrong word as I did not mean to cast doubt on what you said, especially when you went to the trouble of helping me. So a smacke dhand for me and a Thank you to yourself. Consider that I have been reprimanded. pat
