Hi Kevin. A similar query on this board some time ago elicited many responses saying that in many churches the ChristmasEaster christenings were freebies. Also it is very common for families to make block bookings (Quantity Discount????). I have a few who were done at the same time in St Andrews by the Wardrobe! Roger

Some infants were never baptised but it was also not uncommon for children of any age and adults to be baptised. Baptisms are only an indication of a birth year and cannot be relied upon. Sometimes it will state in the parish records that the person was an adult, or give their age if they are not an infant, but aagin this was dependent upon those making the records at the time. John

I have the case where the eldest child was baptised not long after her borth but her four siblings where all baptised on same day, have no idea why tho So i think it depends upon the circumstances at the time Shelli

Kevin, Ann is right - I found a family who had a 'block booking' all five of their children were baptised on the same day back in 1871. Sue

Hi As far as I'm aware it could depend on where your ancestors lived, in some cases the clergyman didn't visit that often. Also, sometimes families would have a 'block' baptism with other families. This happened even as far as mid 20th century, some of my family were baptised together when they were 3, 5 and 7 yrs old. Best wishes Ann

I have traced my ancestors back to the mid 18th century (a marriage in 1749) from what i can gather they had 15 children baptised. However in 2 instances the baptisms are less than 9 months apart, there is time before these baptisms to concieve, give birth and concieve again, baptise the first child, give birth and baptise the second child. did my ancestors wait a few months to baptise some of their children? I have also looked at the parish registers in the hope that they might show some clues to whether the parents are the same or another couple but no there are no clues however there are no other marriages between a Joseph and an Ann during the same period.
