I found something about a distant relative who was born in 1922 (so probably did war service). It said he was the first male nurse in the district, having trained at St James, Leeds and he became charge nurse at Sellafield nuclear plant.

Hi I started Nursing in 1960 and we had a Charge Nurse on Night shift and he had trained at our Hospital so he must have been our first. Ann

Hi Elaine, Male nurses used to be working only in mental health or as fever nurses, until more recently. I started my general nurse training in 1972 and at our hospital,we had the first male student nurse to train there for the general register in our set. Hope that's some help. If you have any other queries about nursing send me an e-mail. Sue

is it fairly safe to assume that a man employed as a male nurse in the 1940's would have been working in some sort of institution??? Elaine
