They have to be of an age to know what is happening and must understand all the proceedings.... my father was not allowed to witness mine as there wasn't an interpreter present and he is deaf although he lip read the registrar. My god-daughter who was 16, was allowed. As for the names, they write what the signature says.... for instance I only sign DIANA and therefore my marriage registration only shows DIANA transcribed and the same with my god-daughter |

It used to be 21 - and was restricted to men only!. when the voting age in the UK was dropped to 18, the minimum age for a witness dropped as well. Don't know when they allowed women to witness. |

I don't think there's a minimum age - as long as they're old enough to know what's going on. Try Google with: witness marriage "minimum age" |

think it's 18 but be warned the registar let me 9yr old sign our cert 2yrs ago to include her in the cermony, but we still had to have two adults sign as well shelli |
