Hello Bob Thats the wee so and so Edwin Richard Chanter, but on ordering the Birth Cert they are telling me that Edwin is not under that PRO Ref. If it's there in Ancestry.com/Rootweb and 1837online all the same ref do I have much hope of finding it if I went personally to the Metro Archives? Thanks anyway Bob greatly appreciated - perhaps they need to go to specsavers. Linda

Thanks for all your suggestions and help, and thank you Carole for looking at the 1837. I will go and have a rummaged in person in the next two weeks, so it's a flask of tea and packed lunch job. Forgot to mention in my original message - he was born in 1860. Anyway ttfn to all Linda

You don't seem to have a year. The same page numbers come up every year or two (or even more frequently), so merely stating Volume, month and page isn't very helpful. Each district had a limited range of page numbers. For example, Boston births were 7a 4xx all through the 1880s.

Linda, Does his age and place of birth on the varius censuses agree with his birth reference? You might be able to figure out what part of the reference is incorrect from that. Crista

Hi Linda, I don;t know if you have access to 1837online, but in case you haven't, I've just checked the entry and it says the same. Carole

Check at 1837 online or the Gro fiches as it could have been written down wrong. I believe Ancestry and BDM share the same info.

You could check the reference number on 1837online, in case the number is a transcription error?

Hi Linda, Try contacting Pancras district register office, tell them the problem you are having and ask if they have a record of his birth for that quarter and year. You won't need to quote the ref.no. you have as this isn't relevant to their indexes. Local offices are generally very helpful, but often busy, so try ringing them first, but don't be surprised if they ask you to write in with what details you have. Best of luck, Carole
