if you flick through the "next household" bits of the 1881 you'll find its not far from the Whitechapel Workhouse Infirmary. As i was going through I did notice that the households before and between the refuge and the workhouse (and still in the same buildings) did appear to be all working families - a couple of police constables among them. I'd be interested if you find out any more about the reruge as Elizabeth Linkstone also there is one of mine.

Rosi I just typed King Edwards Refuge in google and it came up with a link to a rootsweb board. There are a couple of postings on there, don't know if it will be any help, but worth a try! Good luck Sue

Nellie Emma Kearns is on the 1871 (without the s) aged 2 living with her mother and 3 siblings. I think I have found Nellie on the 1881, aged 12, a scholar, but called Ellen Kearns, and living at 'Meto Howards Bldg, King Edwards Refuge, 19, Albert Street, London. Middx. How can I find out if this was a school, or a workhouse or what? All of the other scholars appear to be female - and there are a lot of them. Has anyone else got rellies listed in this place and knows what it is? Rosi
