Hi as I'm very new to this, what is a free BMD? This must seem strange but I'm at the very start and learning all the time......thanks

Lorraine Free BMD is the site that is listing all births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales since 1837 for free. It relies on volunteers to transcribe for them so it is not yet complete. If you click on Resource Centre on left hand side of this page it will take you to a link for useful genealogy research sites. The Free BMD link is there. Hope this helps Sue

Hi Lorraine FreBMD is a site where you can look up births deaths and marriages from 1837 to about 1902. Not all BMD's have been transcribed yet so you will not always find what you are looking for but as it states it is free. It will give you reference numbers to send for certificates. The address is www.freebmd.rootsweb. com Give it a go, you never know what you might find. Jeanette

Oooh exciting - I've just done a quick check, and my first attempts at transcribing for FreeBMD are now on line! Just hope some of you will be looking for Births, December 1887, some of the surnames starting with C. Jan.

It's extended well past 1902 now, some up to about 1908/1910. Still a lot of gaps in the pre 1902 records though. However, an invaluable tool.
