I've been looking for a William Rogerson on the 1881 census and can't find him anywhere. I've tried lots of variations on the name but he doesn't seem to be there. he was born in Hertford, Hertfordshire in 1859 and is in Hertford in 1891. His brother, Edward (or Edwin) is there and he's a Militiaman (anyone know what that means? is he in the army?). Could it be that William is out of the country with the Military? and if so, is there any record of people who were in the armed forces and out of the country during when the census was taken? cheers stew |

Stew There is an Arthur W ROGERSON listed on 1881. He is the right age and born in Hoddesdon, Herts. He is a brewer and his father is Josiah W S ROGERSON. Is this your William? Sue |

Sue, No, William's father is James Rogerson and he was born in Hertford not Hoddesdon. I've searched the 1881 census many times online and he's just not there. I think i did find some people in Hertford who were unknown on the census and i suppose it's possible one of those could've been him stew |
