Excuse me for being so dumb, but could someone confirm the below for me.

I have the birth certificate of my Great Great Grandmother. On her birth certificate she is illegitimate, so the father is not mentioned, only the mother. But on her marriage certificate the father is mentioned and has in brackets under his name (reputed father) I don't wish to appear dumb, but can someone confirm what is mean't by this. and why the father shows on the marriage cert and not the birth. It is a scottish marriage and birth certificate.

She cannot prove who her father was and probably entered the name after hearing something mentioned, reputed means it is not confirmed.

Oh is that what it means. The mother married the reputed father a year after the birth of my great great grandmother. My great great grandmothers mother did not take on the fathers name, unless she reverted back to hers when he died. It is just really confusing me, as they had other children after they married, but on the 1881 census the children she had after her marriage have the fathers surname, but then the mothers surname in brackets.
