On 1901 census I found Stephen JAMES age 31 (b Cowleigh? Worcs, & possibly my GG Uncle) living in Tredegar, Monmouthshire. His occupation is shown as 'highamlman'. Any suggestions? Maybe highwayman - LOL. Sue

Highwayman could be but not what we would think, not many Horse & coaches around in 1901, not that they would own up to anyway, could be something to do with road construction maybe. Irene

Gwyneth His brother-in-law (my G Grandfather) was a railway signalman at St Brides Minor in Glamorgan, so Signalman seem the most likely. Irene I had never thought of a highwayman as a road mender! Logical if you think about it! Thank you both Sue
